Researcher in Social Sciences The Social Sciences department of the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) is opening a position for a Researcher. The candidate should have an excellent research trajectory, which complements and enhances the interests of the department. S/he should engage with current and future research carried in the social science department, notably on socioeconomic and socioenvironmental dynamics and vulnerabilities. The candidate should propose an original research project in social sciences but – related to one of the transversal programmes of the Institute, namely i) forest management, ii) coastal area dynamics, iii) labour. – s/he should be able to work in collaboration with researchers of at least one of the other departments of IFP, namely Indology, Ecology and/or GeoSMIT. In short, s/he should be a social scientist being able to reinforce the bridges with humanities and environmental sciences that are a specificity and a strength of the IFP. We welcome applications from candidates with expertise in conducting social sciences research in India, who have concrete experience building strong international partnerships, relationships and networks with colleagues in order to develop cutting edge research programmes. The selected candidate will thus assume a central position within the department, ensuring the continuity of research programs and carrying the history and memory of the department. Identification:

● Mission: Research either in geography, sociology, anthropology, economy, socio-economics, history, demography, etc.

● Salary level and conditions: 43-75 000 INR/month according to experience Essential Educational qualifications:

● PhD in geography, sociology, anthropology, economy, socio-economics, history, demography or related social science disciplines

● Desirable: International post-doctoral research experience Knowledge and skills:

● Archival work, good knowledge of Indian archives (in India and abroad)

● Field survey, qualitative and quantitative methods and tools of analysis;

● Participatory research and management methods and tools, capacity to interact with various public arenas (NGOs, public authorities, social movements…);

● Ability to take the lead in interdisciplinary projects with the other teams and departments of IFP; Ability to independently design, plan and execute research projects including surveys, analysis, publishing and communicating results;

● Ability to organise scientific workshops and events;

● Ability to apply for and obtain external grants;

● Good insertion in both Indian, French and international scientific networks; Good knowledge of safety policy, legal and deontological frameworks;

● Fluent in English: oral, and reading and writing; good knowledge of Tamil and Hindi will be an asset;
