PROJECT

Critical edition of Sivopanishad

Investigator(s): Dr. T. Ganesan
Start date: 2016

Objectives

Śivopaniṣad, consisting of approximately 700 verses and spread out in seven chapters, deals with Siva-temple construction, some important festivals such as the Car festival, various forms of special offerings and services to the common people and the devotees of Siva.  Unlike the Agama-s this text teaches a general form of Saivism that can be called the ‘Saivism intended for the common man’ without much recourse to elaborate rituals and mantra-s. Though published earlier, the text has not yet been critically edited. As such, a critical edition will help in throwing much light on many unknown aspects of early Saivism.

Materials and methods

The manuscripts belonging to some well-known documented collections in Nepal as well as others in India will be fully utilised for the project.

Main (expected) outputs

Critically edited text accompanied by a detailed introduction, summary of chapters, etc. in the form of a book (in 2 vols.) to be published.
